Overview
Morocco’s story is written in its imperial cities, and this three-day tour gives you a focused introduction to two of the most important. You travel from Marrakech to Fes, the country’s spiritual and cultural capital, then on to Rabat, the elegant Atlantic capital where royal monuments sit beside a modern city centre. Local guides lead the key visits, and transport between the cities is by train or private vehicle.
Fes is the highlight for many travellers. Its old city, Fes el Bali, is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – a maze of lanes where donkeys still carry goods and craftsmen work as they have for centuries. You see the city first from the Merenid Tombs at dusk, then spend a half day exploring with a guide: the Chouara Tannery and its dyeing pits, the zellij tilework of Al Attarine Madrasa and the historic Mellah, the old Jewish Quarter.
On the final day you head west to Rabat to discover a calmer side of Morocco: the Roman and Merenid ruins of Chellah, the blue-and-white lanes of the Kasbah des Oudaias above the ocean, the Andalusian Gardens, the unfinished Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum. With two nights in riads or hotels, breakfasts and entrance fees to the listed monuments included, it is an easy, culture-rich short break.

Day-by-day itinerary
-
1
Day 1: Marrakech – Fes · Merenid Tombs at sunset
Travel from Marrakech to Fes by train, a comfortable journey of around 6.5 to 7 hours, or by private vehicle if you prefer. After checking in to your riad or hotel, you head up to the Merenid Tombs on the hill above the old city as the light fades. From here the whole medina of Fes el Bali spreads out below you, with its minarets and rooftops. Return to your riad for dinner and a quiet night.

Day 2: Fes el Bali guided medina tour
After breakfast, a local guide takes you on a half-day tour of the old city, starting at the blue-tiled Bab Boujeloud gate. Follow Talaa Kebira, the main street of the medina, to the Chouara Tannery, where leather is still dyed in stone vats, then admire the carved cedar and zellij tilework of Al Attarine Madrasa. The tour ends in the Mellah, the historic Jewish Quarter, and its old cemetery. The afternoon is free, with an optional visit to the Ville Nouvelle.

Start the day with an optional visit to a ceramics and tile workshop in Fes to see how the city's famous pottery and zellij are made. Then travel west to Rabat, where a local guide shows you the ruins of Chellah, the Kasbah des Oudaias overlooking the Atlantic, the Andalusian Gardens, the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum with its royal guards.
