Overview

Ait Bouguemez, nicknamed the Happy Valley, is a wide green plain in the Central High Atlas, ringed by peaks and dotted with villages built from red earth. This 3-day tour from Marrakech is a short but complete introduction to the region, combining hiking, encounters with Berber families and shepherds, and nights in a village lodge and a mountain bivouac or lodge.

The first day includes a stop at the Ouzoud Waterfalls for lunch and a walk, before the road climbs to Agouti in the heart of the valley. On day two you walk with muleteers through irrigated fields and the Arous gorges to the sheepfolds of Arous, where transhumant shepherds graze their flocks below the peaks of the M’Goun massif. The last morning climbs past a boxwood forest to the Aghouri pass at about 3,000 m, then descends across the Tafenfant plateau to the Ait Bouali valley, returning to Marrakech via Tissant, the natural bridge of Imi n’Ifri and Demnat.

The tour is moderate, with 2 to 6 hours of walking a day, and suits anyone in good health with average fitness. It runs all year, each season bringing different colours, from spring blossom to winter snow on the peaks. Full board from Marrakech to Marrakech, transfers, a mountain guide, a cook and mules for the luggage are included. The price is on request and depends on season, group size and the level of comfort you choose.

The road then climbs into the Central High Atlas to the Ait Bouguemez valley and the village of Agouti. The day includes 2–3 hours of walking, with about 300 m of ascent and 300 m of descent. Transfer time: 5–6 hours. Overnight: lodge in Agouti.
