Overview

This 13-day mountain bike journey crosses Morocco from the green valleys of the central High Atlas to the palm groves at the edge of the Sahara. Starting and ending in Marrakech, the route links Aït Bouguemez, the foot of the M’Goun massif, the Tassaout Valley, the Valley of Roses, the volcanic Jbel Saghro and the Draa Valley, with ten riding days of 20 to 65 km on dirt tracks, mule paths and quiet mountain roads.

The level is intermediate to advanced. Expect real climbs over passes such as Tizi n’Tighist (2,400 m), Tizi n’Amarskine (2,020 m) and the Tistouit pass (2,300 m), daily height gains of 300 to 900 m, rocky sections and long, flowing descents. A professional mountain bike guide rides with the group, while a 4×4 support vehicle follows the route with luggage and supplies.

Evenings are spent in family-run lodges, gîtes and a village homestay, with one night in a bivouac overlooking the Draa palm groves. Along the way you see dinosaur footprints near Agouti, the natural rock bridge of Imi n’Ifri, collective granaries and earthen kasbahs, Aït Atta nomad country and, on the drive back, the ksar of Aït Ben Haddou. Spring and autumn give the best riding conditions. Prices are quoted on request according to season, group size and bike rental.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

    Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech

Welcome to Morocco. Your driver meets you at Marrakech airport and takes you to your riad or hotel in the heart of the city. Depending on your arrival time, you can head out into the medina, wander through the souks and watch Jemaa el-Fna square come alive at dusk. Dinner on one of the terraces overlooking the square is a fine way to start the trip before the riding begins. Overnight in a riad or hotel in Marrakech.

  2. 2

Day 2: Marrakech – Wawla – Oued Lakhdar – Agouti (Aït Bouguemez) · 32 km

After breakfast, a 110 km transfer by 4x4 takes you via Wawla and the Oued Lakhdar valley into the central High Atlas. Here you saddle up for the first ride: 32 km on smooth tracks through olive, almond and holm oak woodland, passing mud-brick villages that cling to the hillsides. The stage climbs and descends about 800 m, a good warm-up for what lies ahead. You arrive at Agouti, in the Aït Bouguemez valley, where a Berber family welcomes you to their lodge for dinner and the night.

  3. 3

Day 3: Aït Bouguemez Valley loop via the Adazen pass · 45 km

A full day exploring the upper Bouguemez valley, often nicknamed the Happy Valley for its green fields and orchards. The ride heads through Ifrane and past the springs of Aït Imi, then climbs steadily to the Adazen pass before a long descent through groves of fruit trees. A highlight is the stop at the dinosaur footprints preserved in the rock nearby. Expect around 500 m of climbing and descending over 45 km. You return to the same lodge in Agouti for a second night.

  4. 4

    Day 4: Agouti – Tizi n'Tighist (2,400 m) – Abachkou – Imi-n-Ouka · 20 km

A short but demanding stage. You ride through Aït Bouali, the red valley, and along the Jaro canyon beside the Assif Aït Boulli, before climbing to Tizi n'Tighist at 2,400 m, the highest point of the trip, where ancient rock carvings mark the pass. A descent leads into the Abachkou valley, followed by an afternoon climb to Imi-n-Ouka. Expect around 900 m of descent and 800 m of ascent over 20 km. Tonight you stay with a local family in a village homestay.

  5. 5

    Day 5: Imi-n-Ouka – Tizi n'Amarskine (2,020 m) – Imi n'Ifri – Aït Ali-n-Ito · 45 km

Red dirt tracks traverse the hillsides up to Tizi n'Amarskine at 2,020 m, with wide views over the Iwaredne valley. From the pass, the trail drops towards the Demnate area and the village of Imi n'Ifri (1,200 m), famous for its natural rock bridge spanning a gorge. After time to explore the site, you ride on to Aït Ali-n-Ito for the night in a lodge. Around 45 km with 800 m of climbing and 700 m of descent.

  6. 6

    Day 6: Aït Ali-n-Ito – Amezri – Lkhmis N'Imeghrane · 45 km

Today follows the Tassaout valley, one of the wildest corners of the central Atlas. The route fords streams and climbs on steep, winding mountain roads to the pass of Tizi n'Imi-n-Oulaoun, with sweeping views back down the valley. You ride through Amezri, where collective granaries and adobe kasbahs still stand, before reaching Lkhmis N'Imeghrane. About 45 km with 800 m up and 700 m down. Overnight at Auberge Igran.

  7. 7

    Day 7: Lkhmis N'Imeghrane – Azaghar N'Yigr – Boutaghrar (Valley of Roses) · 50 km

Leaving the N'Imeghrane valley, you climb onto the Azaghar N'Yigr plateau, a stark mineral landscape very different from the green valleys of the previous days. The trail then crosses Tizi n'Imdane and descends into the cultivated N'Ait Toumert valley, finally reaching Boutaghrar in the Valley of Roses. Expect 50 km with around 850 m of ascent and 900 m of descent. Overnight in a lodge in Boutaghrar, surrounded by fields and kasbahs.

  8. 8

    Day 8: Boutaghrar – Tistouit pass (2,300 m) – Aït Youl (Dades) · 50 km

The day begins along the Oued M'Goun and through the village of Ikhrem Akdim before a solid climb to the Jbel Tistouit pass at 2,300 m. On the far side, the trail plunges into the Dades valley, with lunch in the gorges among traditional adobe villages. You then follow the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to Aït Youl, where you spend the night in a lodge. About 50 km with 900 m of climbing and 850 m of descent.

  9. 9

    Day 9: Jbel Saghro – Aït Youl – Ifran · 55 km

Now the landscape turns volcanic. Riding south into the Jbel Saghro massif, you cross jagged plateaus, deep canyons and dark basalt peaks that give the area its lunar look. This is the traditional territory of the Aït Atta, a semi-nomadic Berber tribe, and you may meet herders and their flocks along the way. The stage covers 55 km with about 750 m of ascent and 600 m of descent, ending at a lodge in Ifran.

  10. 10

    Day 10: Jbel Saghro – Ifran – Tifrit · 50 km

A second day in the heart of Saghro. A rolling track leads through the Taoudacht valley and around the striking cirque of Tadaoute N'Tiblah, weaving between rocky hills before descending the Ousdidne valley. With about 500 m of climbing and 800 m of descent over 50 km, the stage is more downhill than up, leaving energy to enjoy the scenery and the silence of the massif. Overnight in a lodge in Tifrit.

  11. 11

    Day 11: Tifrit – N'Kob – Zagora · 65 km

The longest ride of the trip, but also one of the most downhill, with around 850 m of descent and only 300 m of climbing over 65 km. A green valley dotted with Berber villages leads to the oasis of N'Kob, after which the scenery opens up into desert plain scattered with small oases. You finish near Zagora, where a bivouac with views over the Draa Valley palm groves awaits for a night under the Saharan sky.

  12. 12

Day 12: Zagora – Ouarzazate – Aït Ben Haddou – Tichka pass – Marrakech

The bikes go on the vehicle for the journey back. You drive north through the gardens, oases and kasbahs of the Draa Valley to Ouarzazate, then stop at the fortified ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The road continues over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, the main road crossing of the High Atlas, before winding down to Marrakech, where you arrive in the late afternoon. Overnight in a riad or hotel.

  13. 13

    Day 13: Departure from Marrakech

Enjoy a last breakfast at your riad or hotel. Depending on your flight time, there may be a chance for a final stroll through the medina, a coffee on a rooftop terrace or some last-minute shopping in the souks. At the agreed time, your driver collects you from your accommodation for the transfer to Marrakech airport. End of the trip, with thirteen days of Atlas and Saharan trails behind you.
