Overview
About three hours from Marrakech, in the Atlas countryside, the Ouzoud River tumbles over a cliff in a series of cascades that drop around 110 metres – the tallest waterfalls in North Africa. This day trip takes you there in a 4×4 or minivan with a professional driver, collecting you from your hotel or riad in the morning and bringing you back in the evening.
The name says a lot about the place: in the Berber language, Ouzoud means olive, and the plateau above the falls is covered in olive trees. From the top, paths and steps lead down through the trees to the foot of the cascades, passing small cafés and old water mills that villagers still use. Troops of wild Barbary macaques live in the woods around the gorge and often come close to the path.
Once you arrive, you are free to explore at your own rhythm. Take a short boat ride across the pool beneath the falls to feel the spray, cool off in the springs and natural pools, or hire a local guide for a walk of about two hours around the gorge and the mills. Lunch is a relaxed affair, with tagine or barbecue served on terraces facing the water. It is an easy, refreshing escape from the city heat and a favourite with families, photographers and nature lovers.

Early afternoon · Boat ride and lunch by the water
At the bottom of the gorge, you can take a short boat ride across the pool to get close to the curtain of water and feel the spray. Then settle into one of the terrace restaurants for a tagine or barbecue lunch with the sound of the falls in the background, or cool off in the springs and natural pools nearby.

Afternoon · Optional guided walk
If you want to see more, a local guide can lead you on a walk of about two hours around the gorge, passing the old water mills and quieter viewpoints on the far side of the river, where few day visitors go. The walk has steps and some uneven ground, so it suits travellers who are comfortable on their feet. Otherwise, simply relax by the pools until it is time to leave.
