Overview

If you only have one day but want a taste of Morocco’s desert south, this trip takes you from Marrakech over the High Atlas to the edge of the Sahara and back. The road climbs through mountain valleys and Berber villages to the Tizi n’Tichka pass, at around 2,200 metres one of the highest mountain roads in North Africa, before dropping into the dry, ochre landscapes of the south.

The heart of the day is Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village built of earth and straw that once stood on the caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. Listed by UNESCO and used as a set for many films and TV series, the ksar is a cluster of small kasbahs climbing a hillside above the river. You walk through its lanes, cross the riverbed and climb to the old fortified granary at the top for wide views over the valley.

From there you continue to Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the Sahara, to visit Taourirt Kasbah, the former seat of a powerful local family, before driving back across the mountains to Marrakech. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver-guide and plenty of photo stops. Please note that this route does not reach the sand dunes – the great dunes of Erg Chebbi are too far for a single day and are covered on our multi-day desert tours.

Highlights

Itinerary

  1. 1

    09:00 · Departure from Marrakech

Your driver-guide picks you up at your hotel or riad in Marrakech at around 09:00. You leave the city and the Haouz plain behind and start climbing into the High Atlas, following a road that winds past walnut trees, terraced fields and earth-built Berber villages clinging to the slopes. Short stops along the way let you stretch your legs, enjoy a mint tea and photograph the valleys.

  2. 2

Morning · Over the Tizi n'Tichka pass

The road reaches the Tizi n'Tichka pass at around 2,200 metres, where you stop for photos of the folded mountain landscape and the peaks around you, often capped with snow in winter. On the southern side of the range the scenery changes quickly, with greener valleys giving way to dry hills, palm groves and the first earthen kasbahs of the desert south.

  3. 3

Late morning · Ait Ben Haddou

Arrive at Ait Ben Haddou, the most famous ksar in Morocco. Cross the riverbed and walk up through the narrow lanes between the kasbahs, then climb to the fortified granary at the top for sweeping views over the valley and the surrounding plains. Your driver-guide shares stories about the caravan trade and the films shot here, and there is time for lunch nearby.

  4. 4

Afternoon · Ouarzazate and Taourirt Kasbah

Continue a short way to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the Sahara and a hub of Morocco's film industry, where the desert plains open up to the south. Visit Taourirt Kasbah, a large earthen residence once used by the region's ruling family, and wander through its decorated rooms, inner courtyards and terraces with views over the town and the wide riverbed.

  5. 5

Late afternoon · Return to Marrakech

Leave Ouarzazate in the late afternoon and drive back over the High Atlas by the same Tichka road, enjoying the changing evening light on the mountains and the villages. A short break on the way keeps the journey comfortable. You arrive back at your hotel or riad in Marrakech in the evening after a long but rewarding day at the edge of the Sahara.

Good to know

  • Departure is at around 09:00 and it is a long day with several hours of mountain driving each way; you are back in Marrakech in the evening.
  • This tour visits the kasbahs at the edge of the desert, not the Sahara dunes; for a camel ride and a night in the dunes, choose one of our multi-day desert tours.
  • The Tichka road has many bends, so bring motion-sickness tablets if you need them.
  • The trip runs all year; spring and autumn are the most pleasant, summer is hot (the vehicle is air-conditioned) and winter can bring snow on the pass.
  • Prices are on request and depend on the season, group size and vehicle; we reply to booking requests within 24–48 working hours.
