Overview

Swap the heat and bustle of Marrakech for a day in the High Atlas. This full-day trip takes you to Imlil, the mountain village at the gateway to Mount Toubkal, and into the surrounding Berber valley, where houses of stone and earth climb the slopes above terraced fields and orchards.

The day begins with a scenic drive and photo stops, followed by breakfast at an argan cooperative, where you can see how the precious oil is produced. In Imlil you set off on a guided walk through the villages, then continue via Chellal to Aremd, perched at around 1,900 m and one of the highest villages in the area, with sweeping views of the peaks. After lunch at a local restaurant with mountain views, a walk leads to the waterfalls, where you can cool off with a swim between April and November.

The pace is relaxed and the walking moderate: a little uphill and some uneven ground on the way to the falls, comfortable for most people with reasonable fitness, including families with older children. Imlil is noticeably cooler than Marrakech, so bring an extra layer. A professional driver-guide stays with you all day, with pick-up at 9:00 and return to your riad around 18:00. The tour runs all year, and prices are on request according to season, group size and vehicle.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    09:00 · Pick-up in Marrakech

Your driver-guide meets you at your riad or hotel and heads south out of the city towards the High Atlas. As the flat plains give way to foothills and red-earth villages, the road starts to wind up into the mountains. There are stops along the way to photograph the valleys and the peaks, and your guide shares stories about the region and its Berber communities as you travel.

  2. 2

Morning · Breakfast at an argan cooperative

The first stop is an argan cooperative, where breakfast is served and you learn how argan oil is produced, from cracking the hard nuts to pressing the oil by traditional methods. It is a good chance to taste local products and, if you wish, to buy oil or cosmetics directly from the cooperative before continuing the drive up to Imlil at the foot of the Toubkal massif.

  3. 3

Late morning · Imlil, Chellal and Aremd

In Imlil, your guided walk begins through the Berber villages of the valley, on paths between stone houses, terraced fields and orchards. You then continue to Chellal and on to Aremd, perched at around 1,900 m, where the views open up towards the high peaks. It is a close look at a way of mountain life that has changed little over the centuries, from the architecture to the daily work in the fields.

  4. 4

Lunch · Local restaurant with mountain views

Lunch is shared at a local restaurant overlooking the mountains, a relaxed moment to try a tagine or other Moroccan dishes and rest your legs. Lunch is not included in the price, so bring some cash. Your guide will happily talk you through the menu and explain Berber customs and the famous hospitality of the mountain villages while you eat.

  5. 5

Afternoon · Walk to the waterfalls

After lunch, a walk with some uphill sections and uneven ground leads to the waterfalls of the valley. Take your time, enjoy the fresh mountain air and the sound of the water and, between April and November, bring a swimsuit if you fancy a dip in the cool pools. Comfortable walking shoes make this part of the day much more enjoyable.

  6. 6

    18:00 · Return to Marrakech

Back in the vehicle, you drive down from the mountains through the foothills and across the plain, returning to Marrakech with drop-off at your riad or hotel at around 18:00, after a full day in the mountains. You arrive in good time for an evening in the medina, perhaps on a rooftop terrace watching the sun set over the Atlas peaks you explored during the day.
