Overview

Only about an hour from Marrakech, the Ourika Valley is the easiest way to swap the city for the High Atlas in a single day. The road runs through olive groves into a valley of terraced fields, river banks and Berber villages built of earth and stone, and the air grows noticeably cooler as you climb.

The day mixes nature and local culture. You stop first at Tnine Ourika, whose weekly market fills the village every Monday; on other days we visit traditional Berber houses, craft workshops or scenic viewpoints instead. Next comes an argan oil cooperative, where you see how the oil is made, and a pottery workshop where local artisans work the clay. After a traditional Moroccan lunch at a local restaurant, an afternoon walk on uneven paths leads to the Ourika waterfalls, with the option of a swim in the natural pools from April to November.

The trip is rated easy to moderate and suits most fitness levels, including children and older travellers with reasonable mobility; you walk at your own pace with places to rest along the way. Transport is by 4×4 or minivan with a professional driver, with pick-up from your riad or hotel at 9:00 and return around 17:00. The tour runs all year, with spring and autumn the most pleasant seasons, and prices are quoted on request.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    09:00 · Pick-up in Marrakech

Your driver collects you from your riad or hotel in a comfortable 4x4 or minivan. The scenic one-hour drive heads out of the city through olive groves and open countryside, with the Atlas peaks rising ahead. As the road begins to climb into the valley, traditional Berber villages of earth and stone start to appear on the slopes above the river and its terraced fields.

  2. 2

Morning · Tnine Ourika and Berber villages

The first stop is Tnine Ourika. On Mondays, its weekly market is a lively rural souk where people from the surrounding villages come to trade produce and everyday goods, a real slice of local life. On other days, the programme includes a visit to traditional Berber houses, local craft workshops or panoramic viewpoints over the valley, so there is always something to discover.

  3. 3

Midday · Argan cooperative, pottery and lunch

Continue to an argan oil cooperative to learn how this precious oil is produced and what it is used for, then visit a pottery workshop to watch local artisans at work. Lunch follows at a local restaurant, with traditional Moroccan dishes such as tagine served in a relaxed setting. Lunch is not included in the price, so bring some cash.

  4. 4

Afternoon · Walk to the waterfalls

In the afternoon, set off on foot to the Ourika waterfalls. The path is uneven in places but can be taken at your own pace, with spots to rest along the way and plenty of chances for photos. From April to November, bring a swimsuit for a refreshing dip in the natural pools below the falls before heading back to the vehicle.

  5. 5

    17:00 · Return to Marrakech

After a last look at the valley and its waterfalls, you climb back into the vehicle and drive back down through the countryside to Marrakech, with drop-off at your riad or hotel around 17:00. You arrive with the evening free to enjoy the medina, a stroll to Jemaa el-Fna square or dinner on a rooftop terrace after a day in the cool air of the mountains.
